SPECIAL TRIBUTES, POET, PRESENTER & AUTHOR
After the great success of Golden Soil an anthology which incorporates the ‘finest work’ of Rupert McCall over a 27 year period, it seemed an obvious step! After all, it it’s one thing to read Rupert’s greatest poems, it’s another thing to hear them recited by the man himself.
Including such favourites as Green and Gold Malaria, Backyard Cricket, A Firefighter’s Dream and A Hundred Years From Now with odes to legends the likes of Shane Warne, Roger Federer, Jonathon Thurston and Black Caviar! Rupert tells the story behind each poem... and then delivers with passion.
Rupert’s long-awaited ‘best of’ anthology featuring his finest work (1992 to 2019) Including his acclaimed poems Green & Gold Malaria, Backyard Cricket, A Firefighter’s Dream, The Crocodiles are Crying, Cyclone Winx, A Hundred Years From Now and many more!
Rupert McCall is a highly respected and internationally renowned Australian poet with a strong passion for sport. Whether reciting a special tribute to a special occasion or speaking at an event, few can capture the essence of the moment like Rupert. He has been honoured with addressing crowds from Anzac Cove at Gallipoli to Ground Zero for the New York Fire Department in America. Rupert has also worked in TV (The Great South East & Weekend Extra) commentated at The Rugby World Cup (France 2007) and hosted radio shows (Sports Today 4BC).

“Rupert is a fantastic poet and orator as well as being a champion bloke. For myself personally and on behalf of the North Queensland Cowboys, I’d eagerly recommend him for any related MC or hosting gig. His presence would be a brilliant addition to any function and I can say from experience just what a positive effect his words had on me and the boys as we embarked on the challenge of another National Rugby League season.”
JOHNATHAN THURSTON
(Australian NRL Legend)
“I have no problem recommending Rupert to any company that needs an MC, poet or public speaker. He is a proven performer highly rated by many people and will enhance any function or special occasion you might have planned. To go with that, you have one of the nicest blokes I have met.”
DARREN LEHMANN
(Australian Cricket Coach)
“Poet Rupert McCall came into our changing room before play, and read the Ashes poem he had just finished. He’s an amazing poet and a very well-spoken man. For me personally, having always cared greatly about the history of the game, I found it an emotion-charged recital. Rupert’s poem goes right back to the inception of the Ashes in 1882 and takes in some great Australian and English players all the way to the present day. It was very inspiring for us to listen to.”
MICHAEL CLARKE
(Australian Cricket Legend)
We three siblings commissioned Rupert to write and recite a poem of significance to honour our father, Bails Myer, on the occasion of his 93rd birthday. The whole process was delightful for the three of us. The delivery of the poem on the night added greatly to the overall experience of Rupert’s work, especially given that he had committed the poem to memory. The recitation was brilliantly delivered and, for all those present, it transformed the evening into something that was unforgettable.

“I am neither a poet nor a wordsmith, but fortunately Rupert McCall excels at both. Few people have captured the promise of opportunity, the spirit of liberty and the power of doing good so eloquently.”
CHARLES KOCH
(Chairman & CEO, Koch Industries)
“In December last year I was organising a personal party to celebrate attending my fiftieth consecutive Varsity Match at Twickenham. I could have asked a number of ex-players, many of whom are Blues but Rupert was my first choice. I felt privileged and delighted when he agreed to come to London from Brisbane. He wrote “The Ballad of the Blues” especially for the event. He was brilliant on the day. I received a number of messages of thanks from the guests after the event. Every single letter mentioned Rupert’s exceptional contribution to a very special day. Rupert will always be top of my list for events of this nature.”
CHRIS BRUNTON
(Chief Executive, The Cavendish Group)
“The ‘Golden Thread’ represents everything that is great about our game and our supporters; the history’ the pride’ the passion and the opportunities that Rugby provide. This ‘ode’ will stand the test of time and has already become an important part of the Wallabies culture on our road to World Cup success in 2015 and beyond.”
BILL PULVER
(Chief Executive Officer ARU)
“We have received such wonderful feedback from the regions and attendees of the QLD Regional Showcase that Rupert McCall was the perfect person for the role. As MC, he set the tone for the two days so that everything went smoothly and stress-free. In fact one person referred to it as an “inspired choice”! Rupert’s poem has also been a big hit with a number of regions requesting a copy.”
LAUREN DIAMOND
(Horwill Director Strategic Communications, Queensland Government)
“I’d never heard of Rupert McCall before, I’ll be honest with you, but when he stood up on that stage – with some of the most successful and influential people in the world in the audience - and started into a poem that he’d composed just for this one event, well, I’d never seen anything like it. To think I had to follow that! I was freaking out! This guy’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. The best at what he does. A modern day William Shakespeare, Will Rogers, Mark Twain – you put it all together, you got Rupert. Whenever you see him, you can’t believe what he just did!”
JASON HEWLETT
(American entertainer, comedian & impersonator)
“In the years since 9/11, I have witnessed speeches, songs, poems and sermons from poets, priests and politicians alike. I have literally heard it all. Rupert’s poem was head and shoulders above all of that. I could not believe that a person a half a world away – someone I had never met – could strike a chord so closely with our experience in New York. This man has an incredible gift.”
LIAM FLAHERTY
(Captain Rescue Company 2 FDNY)
“It was an absolute delight to have Rupert as our MC. His easy going nature and poetic flare make him an entertaining and fun host. His people skills are impressive with the ability to make everyone feel comfortable and involved. We had many positive comments from our staff on how they enjoyed meeting him and listening to his poems. We thank him for making our Christmas Party a special and memorable night.”
